The overall history of Saddle Brook goes back to the birth of Saddle River Township, which was created in 1716, including the entire territory of Bergen County present towards the west of the Saddle River. In the beginning, the township's name got derived from the Saddle River, which is a tributary of the Passaic River flowing through New Jersey. In 1955, the Saddle River Township officially got renamed to its current name, Saddle Brook.
